Information for custom glass

Ordering custom stained or etched glass can be a little scary your first time.  We want to make this as easy and enjoyable as possible.  Of course, we will be in close communication with you every step of the way.

Visit our sneak-peek page for pattern ideas
for cabinet doors, arched windows, sidelights, etc.

What we need from you:

  1. Do you want stained glass, etched, or multi-stage etched (carved) glass?

  2. Outside dimensions in inches (we will deduct 1/8" around the perimeter for spacing)

  3. Pattern or design (send us a copy if you have one or we can find/create one for you)
(depending on the intricacy of the design, the panel will be either foil or lead construction.)

  4. Glass colors & texture (use the  links to the glass manufacturers to choose colors and/or textures.  If you're unsure, we recommend Spectrum Glass ).

  5. Frame style: Zinc or Wood (specify wood choice)

  6. Deadline or finish date

  7. Budget range:  There are ways to help stay within your budget.  Some things that would save money include:

  •  Have an idea of the pattern desired (and colors if possible) (to reduce design time fees)

  • Use a pre-designed pattern (there are thousands available from many different companies)

  • Reduce the number of pieces.  There are ways in which the quantity of pieces can be adjusted without really compromising the aesthetics.  These include: combining pieces, using foil, wire overlay or paint in place of a break line.

What are the steps in the process?

  1. Gather the information. Provide us with the information above

  2. Give you an estimate on the cost.  We will then give you an estimate price for the project.  A design fee will be discussed.

  3. Design & approval process.  The design will be generated or transferred into a special software program made special for the stained glass industry.  This will allow us to put your selected glass colors into the design and generate a .jpg file to e-mail to you or print out for you to review.  We can also print a full scale line drawing if you like.  Once it is approved, we request a 30% deposit.

  4. Construction begins.  Glass is ordered (takes approx. 1 week to get into the studio) and construction begins.  Depending on the project and our production schedule, the completion date ranges from 3 - 6 weeks or so.  We will discuss this with you during the design & approval process.  Occasionally we will photograph and document the construction process.  We will e-mail you on the status if you like.   If you are in the area we invite you to stop by and see the project under construction any time!  Visit our Sneak Peek page to see examples of past projects.

  5. Delivery.  Depending on your location you can:  1)  Pick up at the studio (Lake of the Ozarks, MO - west side).  2)   Have delivery and installation (prices varies depending on location). Or  3) we can ship most anywhere in the world.  We prefer UPS for United States intercontinental deliveries and use the United States Postal Service for international deliveries.

In order to give you an exact quote, we must have the approximate finished design to scale.  As you can imagine, this takes a lot of time.

General pricing for custom windows:

Stained Glass

Each situation is unique, making a "standard price" impossible.  However, as a general price structure, for foil construction, we charge $95 per square foot plus $1 per piece (on an average, expect approximately 40 pieces per square foot. To compare with other stained glass studios, our average per square foot price would equal approximately $125-$150 per foot). Lead or brass is special order.

Obviously, a window incorporating a zillion pieces will take our artisan longer than a window with a few larger pieces, therefore a highly complex window  or windows that are an odd shape (not square or rectangle) may also have additional fees applied.  Please notify us of your timeframe. We use both the foil method and the lead method - depending on the design. Graphic design & custom pattern services are $35 per hour.

Click here to go to our Custom Stained Glass Page
which explains in more detail how to figure approximate pricing.

Etched

For etched glass, figure 50 cents - $1 per inch plus the cost of glass.  Again, if the piece is complex it will require more time and work, therefore cost a little more. (Etched is a one-time surface etch.)  Tempered glass must be etched - it cannot be carved or multi-stage etched.  Minimum quantities or charges may apply due to the high cost of resist and the labor involved with setup. There are also setup and design fees.  Refer to our etched glass page.

Carved

For carved/multi-stage etched glass pieces, figure around $1.50-$2 per inch plus the cost of glass.  There is an additional charge for thicker glass or for the tempering process after it has been carved (for safety glass ratings).  Safety laminated glass is good for this when safety is a factor.  There are also setup and design fees.  Refer to our etched glass page.
